About John's bisexuality

I really wish we had more fics exploring John’s bisexuality, instead of dismissing it with a line about him being “straight with an exception”. When did John realize he was bisexual? Was it in the army when he fell in love with Sholto or before? What happened exactly with Sholto? Is this a huge part of why he is depressed at the beginning of ASIP? Has he ever had a relationship with a woman, except Mary, that lasted more than six months? How does the fact that he’s in the closet influence his relationship with Harry? Does he resent her because she’s an alcoholic or because she walked out on her wife, with whom she had an open, queer relationship? Is it both? What about his relationship with his parents? Did he feel that he had to be the model child to counterbalance Harry? The normal son, who does everything right? Is that why he decided to join the army? To escape all this? What does it mean to come out of the closet at his age? Is it hard? Is it easier because he’s finally with Sherlock?
